Isham's animals are spirit animals -- at once majestic embodiments of the spirit of life at its basic and noble spirits in themselves. She shows that they, like human beings - indeed, even more conspicuously than human beings -- have souls. One senses that, in conveying the nobility of spirit in animals, Isham is struggling to maintain her belief in the nobility of the human spirit, which, in view of the evils it has wrought--they increasingly seem to outweigh its creative triumphs--seems more grossly "bestial" than any animal ever was. - Donald Kuspit |
